I’m not mentioning any names, but one of my dear family members brought a cold virus into my safe haven. Last week, everyone else in the house was miserable, except for me. I was the last one standing.
This morning, I awoke with scratchy throat that was dying to betray me.
I can’t get sick. I’m a homeschool mom. If I get sick, it can turn into Lord of the Flies around here pretty quickly. So, I turned to kitchen from which all things comforting and good come and made an herbal cough syrup to sooth my ravaged throat.
Last month, I ordered some bulk herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs to help heal us when we are sick and avoid over-the-counter medications whenever possible.
I love it when a plan comes together.
I didn’t weigh out each and every herb. I did portion out the valerian and licorice, but everything else was added until I reached 2 oz. of herbs.
Herbal Cough Syrup
2 oz. herb mixture*
1 qt. filtered water
1 c. buckwheat honey
*The herbs I used for this herbal recipe are:
sage and French thyme (fresh)
1 Tbsp. valerian (dried)
1 Tbsp. licorice root (dried)
1 stick cinnamon
ginger root (fresh)
orange peel (dried)
Measure out herb mixture and water. Simmer the herbs and water on the stove top until reduced by half. It might take a couple of hours. Be patient, grasshopper.
Strain the herbs and return the liquid to the pan. At this point, what you have is a very strong tea.
Add one cup of buckwheat honey ( I like Walker Honey Farm honey since it’s local and pure) to the liquid in the pan and warm just enough to thoroughly combine the mixture. We don’t want to lose any of the living goodness in the honey.
This step is optional: Add one to two drops of peppermint or spearmint essential oil. I did this on half of my syrup and I definitely recommend it. I left the other half plain so that the syrup wouldn’t be too strong for Baby Honeybee.
Transfer to an amber bottle or other dark glass and store in refrigerator. According to Rosemary Gladstar, herbal syrups will keep in the refrigerator for weeks, if not months without spoiling. This book will tell you all about it:
When the need strikes, take 1-2 teaspoons every hour or two. Another tasty way to use this is to stir it into a mug of hot water and drink as a tea. Whatever floats your love boat.
After just one dose of this syrup, my raw, scratchy throat no longer felt like it was about to betray me. I gave this to my girls who both had a pretty bad cough and I haven’t heard one cough in the last hour. I’m convinced this does some good.
